KARL STORZ HYDOME^™ Endoscopy System Receives Red Dot Award

Tuttlingen, 4/24/2019: The KARL STORZ HyDome^™ system received the world-renowned Red Dot Award in the category “Product Design 2019” due to its outstanding quality of design and functionality. The HyDome^™ system’s unique design that ensures maximum hygiene met the evaluation criteria regarding degree of innovation, functionality, and design quality and won over the distinguished international jury. The KARL STORZ product was selected as an award winner from among 5,500 submissions.

The KARL STORZ HyDome^™ duodenoscopy system combines a reusable endoscope for duodenal endoscopy and bile duct treatment with an innovative lever mechanism (“Albarran mechanism”), which is replaced by a new, hygienically safe module after each use on a patient. This lever mechanism ensures that the instruments can be steered and can therefore enter the bile ducts. With this solution, KARL STORZ offers the best of both worlds: The duodenoscopy system is a reusable medical device, offering outstanding quality and lasting functionality. To prevent hygiene deficits, the lever mechanism is supplied as a sterile single-use product. Discarding and replacing the lever mechanism after each procedure eliminates the difficult cleaning and disinfection of this mechanism. Removing the lever mechanism also facilitates thorough cleaning of the Albarran channel. This smart design solution therefore increases patient safety and reduces the risk of cross-contamination that may result from insufficient reprocessing of the lever mechanism.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the biggest design competitions worldwide and has been held for 60 years. In 2019, designers and manufacturers from 55 nations submitted more than 5500 product entries. The international jury comprises experienced experts from different specialties and meets annually to identify the best designs. In the course of a multi-day evaluation process, jury members test the products, discuss them, and ultimately make a sound judgment about the design quality of the submissions. True to the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, they base their evaluation on criteria like degree of innovation, functionality, formal quality, durability, and ergonomics.
